Why did you choose to teach at MBS?

Daniel:

“The first reason was the environment since it has a big clean campus and a big playground. The breeze from the sea and the sight of the fog from the mountains also filled me with positive energy. This combination of space and good weather made the perfect recipe for sports and movement.

The second reason was the sports equipment that the school had. The PE Room literally has everything a PE teacher needs for a functional class. The use of modern equipment is the new age of sports and to find a school that has such equipment means that they care about the sport and physical health of their students.

In simple terms, MBS has a good sports culture and I wanted to be a positive part of this culture and environment, that’s why I chose MBS.”

Please describe your experience of teaching at MBS since you started teaching there.

Daniel:

Teaching at MBS has been nothing but positive! All the teachers are down-to-earth which contributes to a healthy working environment and the administration is quite poised, organized, and transparent.

MBS always strives for growth and excellence and so teachers are on a constant learning curve as they learn from each other through the use of our intranet network and innovative departmental open classes. My experience working here has been about growth, as I’ve learned a lot and continue to learn everyday.”

As HoD of PE in MBS, what kind of PE program and teaching atmosphere are your team committed to providing for students?

Daniel:

This is a very good question, since creating a good atmosphere for sports is one of the PE department's important objectives. Basically, we want to create an atmosphere that will generate a lot of interest in sports or sporting activities from our students.

MBS PE team teachers

We want them to feel free and be expressive in PE class as we present them with creative games that require a lot of passion, teamwork, sacrifice, critical thinking, etc. We want our students to enjoy sports activities to the extent that their interest would not be diminished in the absence of the PE teacher. We want them to want to do sports because they love it, not because they are told to do sports. Our ultimate goal is to leave our students with a more positive self-developed interest in sports when entering high school.”

What sports are offered in each of the MBS middle school and high school PE programs

Daniel:

In the Middle School, the plan is to introduce basic sports like basketball, football, volleyball, American football, and swimming. We believe that students at this level are still in the exploratory stage. It’s our duty to introduce to them all these basic sports and try to develop their interests in them so that by the time they get to high school, they already know what sport they are interested in. Aside from these basic sports mentioned above, we also take them through some invasion games like frisbee, capture the flag, steal the diamonds, flag football, etc.

Our main goal here is to guide them to develop some effective skills and values like teamwork, tolerance, and hard work. We believe that these are skills that they will not only need in sports but will need throughout their entire lives, so we try to instill these values in them through these games. Just as the development of the body is important in playing sports, we need to develop the mind also. That’s why we offer mindfulness and stretching classes to our Middle school students.

As a continuation of the Middle School program, the high school classes are more specialized. We have the ECA program where each student can select between football, basketball, swimming, and CrossFit. For normal high school PE classes, the aim is to help build their physical qualities be it strength, agility, speed, and skill. The program at this level puts more focus on the details of a particular sport or position in a particular sport. We’ll be focusing on frisbee, basketball, Flag football, volleyball, and track.

How do you evaluate the significance of the external PE program to the learning and growth of the students in the general high school?

Daniel:

Sports in general go to an extent of influencing people that indulge in them. This influence can be good or bad depending on the materials and guides that are used in delivering that particular instruction.

The PE program is no exception to this rule which is why our able PE teachers put a lot of time and focus into helping students build good values through PE. Values like leadership, partnership, strategy, competition, motivation, and expression in students are first touched through PE. I witnessed this firsthand when I taught the High school students frisbee. Initially, most of them were shy and didn’t even know the English names of their colleagues. But after a couple of practices, they became more expressive.

I would borrow an old famous quote that says ‘all work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy. All play and no work make Jack a lazy boy. ’ In simple terms, PE and sports activities are as important as non-sports activities. Too much of one maybe affect the students negatively and that’s why our School and PE programs are designed to bring balance and development to our students.”
